How to Get Your Outdoor Space Ready for Summer Entertaining

If you enjoy entertaining outside in the summer, its time to start getting ready now. Considering alot of people are home right now, its the perfect time. Prepping the garden, walks, and patio is typically an ongoing project. If you plan out a couple weekends in the spring to tackle the upkeep, you’ll have that backyard oasis by summer.

Early March or April

In early spring either March or April depending on where you live, I would suggest doing a general clean up to get started. A lot of gunk can build up over the winter, so power washing your walks and patio is a great place to start. You don’t realize how dirty something is until you power wash it. This is probably Vince’s favorite part. But I’ll admit, it is quite rewarding to see the difference.

Edging your sidewalks is something else to do early in the spring. Typically if you do this once a year you’ll be in good shape. You’ll be able to maintain your edged walks as long as you mow and weedwack your lawn regularly.

Next, while you are working in the yard, I would rake any remaining leaves that have collected over the winter.  Cut back and prune any shrubbery or landscaping. When you do this early in the season, it helps stimulate new growth and gives the plants a jumpstart. You’ll also want to pull and spray for any weeds and pests. You will probably have to do this throughout the year, but its always good to get an early start on it in the spring. Lastly, bring your patio furniture out and give it a good clean.

April or May

Once it gets a bit nicer out (and frosts are no longer a concern) you’ll be ready to start planting! Check out your landscaping for any bare areas that you want to fill in and figure out if you want any flower baskets or beds. I typically hang flower baskets on our front porch every year. I also have flowers planted throughout the yard. My biggest callout which probably comes as a no brainer to many, is make sure you know what your planting and where. If your backyard is predominately shady, make sure the plants you get for that space like the shade. Sounds simple enough, but this took me years to implement.

After everything is planted, if you use mulch, this would be a great time to put down a fresh layer. Mulch just freshens everything up in the spring and makes the lawn look well cared for.

Final Touches

To complete your backyard oasis, its time to add the final touches. Stringing lights is always a great addition and provides soft lighting for evenings on the patio. Citronella candles also provide nice ambiance and help keep the bugs away.

If you’re looking to add some color and freshness to your space, consider a vertical herb garden. These don’t take up much space and add a pleasant smell if you are sitting out on the patio. Somewhere near the grill would be the perfect spot. We have a pergola in our backyard, and we have our herb garden hanging vertically on the pillar. You can’t beat the fresh smell of basil or cilantro on a summer evening. If herbs aren’t your thing, plant some lavender or jasmine to freshen things up. Lastly, to really create a cozy space, get some outdoor cushions and pillows. This will help transform your backyard from a patio to an additional living space.
